Lakina Traverse:

Wrangle Saint Elias, Alaska

In August Garret and Myself met in Glen Allen and drove to the Wrangles to do the Lakina Loop. There is a great deal of information about this loop all over the internet. Including Luc’s page and the packraft forum.

Take aways...There are social trails just about everywhere you think there should be.

Crampons would be better than Yak tracks, but both work. The glacier crossing where slightly harder than casual and you’ll want to know what your doing.

Don’t try to go into Hidden Valley via the glacier, it is not passable. Go up and around the cliffs on the north side of the valley. There is a good trail.

The river was in action stage when we did it. Out of the glacier is busy bumpy rocky class II. Then braided for a couple miles. Then you enter the ox bow rock gardens. Some of the corners raise to class III. For the most part it is just busy water crowded with rocks. I swam because I was tired and stopped looking for rocks. High centered on one and you know the rest.

Take out is the road. You’ve got 15 miles back to your car so figure out some sort of shuttle, bike, car, or hitch.
